Southern-Fried Tofu

Southern-Fried Tofu  Craving some Southern-fried Chicken?  Well, this not quite the same, but IT IS crunchy and the taste is spot on.

Ingredients
    Seasoned Coating
  • 0.25 cup toasted Beadcrumbs
  • 0.25 cup Nutritional Yeast
  • 2 tsp Poultry Seasoning (OR see Note)
  • Batter
  • 0.33 cup Chickpea (Besan) Flour (≈ 90ml)
  • 0.25 cup Water
  • 0.25 tsp Apple Cider Vinegar
  • 0.25 tsp table Salt
  • 300 g Firm Tofu - pressed and sliced into 1cm-thick slices of the desired shape
  • Maple Sauce
  • 0.25 cup Mayonnaise
  • 0.25 tsp Garlic powder
  • 0.25 tsp Mustard powder
  • 0.75 tsp dried Tarragon
  • 0.75 tsp Maple Syrup
Instructions
  1. Preheat the oven to 200°C (180°C fan-forced). Line a baking dish with oiled baking paper.
  2. Mix together the bread crumbs, yeast and seasoning mix, in a shallow dish or a dinner plate.
  3. Place the chickpea flour in a small bowl, add the water and vinegar and whisk to combine. Pour into a shallow dish or dinner plate.
  4. Dip the tofu into the batter – coating all sides, then into the seasoned breadcrumb mixture.
  5. Place the tofu pieces into the baking dish and bake for 20 minutes. Turn over and bake for further 10 minutes.
  6. Meanwhile, combine the sauce ingredients in a small bowl.
  7. Serve with potato chips (fries) and salad or green vegetables.
